I first heard about “freelance content writing” from my friend back on campus. I thought it was just being given a task by a stranger to write an article, agree on payment terms, and that’s the end of the story.
At first, I didn’t know that freelance content writing is an actual profession, one that combines creativity, marketing, and storytelling to help businesses grow.
Freelance writing is a growing digital career in Kenya. Platforms like Fiverr, Upwork, and LinkedIn offer chances of becoming a freelance content writer.
If you’re wondering how to start your journey as a content writer, this guide is both my story and a step-by-step guide to help you begin with real lessons I learned along the way.

Step 1: Discover What Content Writing Really Means
When I started, I thought content writing was just about good, polished English. But as I proceeded with my career in content writing, I realized that clients were not interested in your grammar but in how you can help them achieve their purpose and goals.
For example, help them to:
- Generate leads in their businesses.
- Build authority in their area of expertise.
- Educate their readers
- Improve SEO rankings
In short, what you’re writing must help in achieving something.
Read brand blogs like HubSpot and Buffer and notice how every article connects to a marketing goal. They will help you understand that every article you write must be connected to a bigger goal.

Step 2: Learn a skill
I didn’t start with paid courses; what I learned came from free platforms like HubSpot Academy, Google Digital Garage, and YouTube tutorials.
Here’s what you actually need to master:
- Research & SEO basics so your writing ranks on Google.
- Storytelling & tone so readers don’t just skim your words; they feel them.
- Editing & structural clarity are essential in content writing.
Recommended free resources:
- HubSpot Academy: For SEO, blogging, and content marketing.
- Grammarly: For editing and tone checks.
- Google Trends: For finding ideas.
For example, through HubSpot Academy, I learned about content marketing and its relation to content writing, and also SEO optimization for free.
Step 3: Build Your Freelance Portfolio Before You Apply Anywhere
Before expecting clients to pay you, you need to show what you can do, and that’s where a portfolio is very critical.
A portfolio speaks for you. When a client goes through your work, they can tell whether you can be trusted with the task at hand.
Your portfolio can be a simple folder with well-written sample articles that demonstrate:
- Your niche knowledge (e.g., digital marketing, health, or lifestyle)
- Your writing tone (formal, conversational, or creative)
- Your structure (headings, flow, and clarity)
When I began, I created a Journo portfolio. Journo portfolio allowed me to showcase my work using custom pages. You don’t need a website yet; you can create a Journo portfolio and then generate a link to share with your clients whenever they ask to see your work.
Step 4: Finding clients
Once your samples are ready, it’s time to get your first paying gig.
These are some of the platforms that you can start with:
- Upwork: For you to succeed on Upwork, you need a good profile and a portfolio. The platform is built for serious job seekers, and to start, you must buy Connects. The platform works for people of all skill levels, so it’s a good place to start.
- Fiverr: Here you list your services as ‘Gigs’ and then clients usually find you. Ensure your gigs are properly described, and prices are set for clients to fall for you.
- ProBlogger Job Board: The platform usually focuses on writing jobs, including blog posts, articles, editing, and proofreading. Most of the time, the postings come from well-known businesses and blogs that need professional writers.
- LinkedIn: Look for jobs as a content writer by using the job search function. Make sure your profile is optimized to draw in recruiters and connect with marketing experts. Many businesses use this platform to hire writers directly rather than through freelance job boards.
- Contently: For content marketing projects, this platform matches big brands with talented independent writers. On their website, you create a portfolio, and the platform connects you with opportunities.
- Freelancer.com: In this platform, you create a profile and start applying for jobs posted by clients. The competition is usually high, hence ensure your profile is optimized and you’re always active to apply for the latest jobs posted.
- Reddit: Register on reddit and join subreddits that usually post job opportunities, such as r/forhire, r/freelance_forhire.
As you work, develop a professional portfolio. You can reach higher-paying clients more quickly with high-quality samples. Communicate clearly with your clients. Complete the work on schedule. Your career will be established by these steps.
Step 5: Learn how to negotiate price
My first client paid me $4.17 for a 1,000-word blog post. I was over the moon until I realized I had spent six hours writing it.
I’m still happy with that because my client was satisfied with my work and connected me to even more clients. I gradually raised my rates as I developed skills and perfected my art in content writing.
As a beginner, you need to know your worth so that you don’t undercharge or overcharge. You can start by charging $ 0.009 per word as a beginner, then raise your rates gradually.
Step 6: Keep Improving and Building Your Brand
Freelancing is a career that you develop over time, and it requires patience and endurance.
As you write more, always ensure you;
- Continually update your portfolio and bio on LinkedIn.
- Enroll in advanced courses (such as the SEO or copywriting certification offered by HubSpot).
- Make connections with other authors. Participate in webinars or online communities.
For instance, following my HubSpot certification, I observed that clients started having greater faith in my knowledge, which gave me an upper hand when I was applying for jobs.
Tips for Freelancing Beginners
- Start before you feel ready. You’ll learn faster by doing.
- Write daily. Even one paragraph improves your voice.
- Accept feedback. It’s how you grow.
- Be reliable. Deadlines build your reputation more than talent does.
- Keep learning. Trends change fast; stay curious.
